ALL ABOUT THE INDEPENDENCE MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY / MEDIA CENTER LIBRARY PHILOSOPHY & CURRICULUM The IMS Library/Media Center planned course of study is designed with the young adolescent in mind. This curriculum facilitates the concept of empowering students to move toward the ideal of being independent learners, while instilling the love of literature and an enjoyment of recreational reading. LIBRARY COLLECTION ~ 12,000 fiction, non-fiction, and paperback books~ 30 magazine subscriptions (including current and back issues) ~ Vertical File ~ Videos, laser discs, CD/tape stereo, TV/VCR, & other audio-visual equipment ~ Classroom sets (30 copies each) of FAST I and FAST II science textbooks CIRCULATION PROCEDURES ~ All materials circulate for three weeks.~ Overdue materials cost 5 cents per school day per material. ~ Students having library obligations may not take out books until all obligations are met. One book per subject is permissible. ~ Report Cards are held by the Library until all obligations are met. ~ The Library copier costs10 cents per copy. USE OF THE LIBRARY ~ Teachers bring students to the Library for reference, research, literature appreciation, book choice, and for completion of the IMS Library Curriculum.~ Homeroom in the Library: Homeroom teachers bring their students to the Library for recreational reading, choosing a book, and other Library activities. ~ Ready Reference: Any student who does not have a study hall may visit the Library on Mondays and Fridays during homeroom for research, homework, class projects, or choosing a book. ~ Study Halls: Students from each study hall by use the Library for research or homework. Strict attention is paid to time-on-task and behavior. ~ The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is available on school days. ~ The Video Room is housed in the Library, and is under the direction of the Librarian. ~ The Video Room (DYNACOM System) has the capacity to program videos, laser discs, still videos, school programs, and commercial (educational) television. Seventy classrooms have DYNACOM capabilities. TECHNOLOGY ~ Automated Circulation System (CIRC+) and automated Card Catalog System (CAT+)~ 18 networked computers for staff & student use ~ Encarta '96, Bookshelf '95, ACCESS PA, 1996 Grolier, InfoTrac, Internet, O.S.C.A.R.
